About the museum

The core of the museum is the military history collection of Leipheim air base: in 1989 the last deputy commander of the air base group handed the holdings over to the historian Roland Remp, who over the following decade and a half expanded them into a small exhibition for soldiers and registered visitor groups.

When the closure of the Luftwaffe site became apparent in the late 1990s, former members of the base joined together in 2005 to form a museum association in order to secure the collection for Leipheim. This succeeded only in part: outstanding pieces went to other collections on the Luftwaffe's orders, and in April 2008 the old collection was closed. Pictures, files, wall decorations and some equipment, however, remained on site.

At the beginning of 2009 the town of Leipheim made Building 361 available to the association, a former protective building for ammunition assembly. There the volunteers gathered aircraft, military vehicles, uniforms and equipment to document the history of the airfield from 1935 to 2009. In 2013 the museum officially opened to the public and has been steadily expanded since. In 2018 the association rebuilt the air base memorial, erected in 1938 and due to be demolished, on the museum grounds. A military vehicle meeting and a model-building exhibition take place every year.
