Opening hoursAdmission from €2 Partially accessible

About the museum

The impetus came in 1904 from the Historischer Verein Günzburg (Günzburg Historical Society), which at first housed its collection in rooms of the Gymnasium. As the holdings kept growing, the museum moved in 1937 to the south wing of Günzburg Palace, where the pieces could be displayed spaciously and in order for the first time.

Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, air raids destroyed a large part of the collection. After years in makeshift quarters, the museum found a new home in 1958 in the former Piarist college on Rathausgasse, which had been built in 1757. After a thorough renovation, the holdings were set up anew in 1982; since then, the museum has been classified as a regional focus museum for archaeology.

Today the museum is run by the town of Günzburg, and the Historischer Verein continues to support its work. On three floors and more than 600 square meters, the exhibition spans the first traces of settlement some 4,000 years ago and Roman Günzburg, paintings and sculptures from the Gothic period to the 19th century, religious crafts, and evidence of the history of rule and of everyday life in the town and its surroundings.
