About the museum
The smithy was founded in 1812 by Wilhelm Jacob Wildhack, whose family worked here as master blacksmiths for several generations. When mass production changed the trade and Jacob Wildhack became unable to work after an accident, the business was closed.
In 1988 the Wildhack family gave the old village smithy to the municipality of Schwanewede. In 1996 the friends' association was founded, and on May 1, 1996 the smithy museum opened. Since then, the members have accomplished a great deal through their own labor: the restored bellows from 1833, an extension for an air hammer acquired in 2017 (in operation since 2021), and in 2018 the exhibition on the history of an "Einwanderer" (immigrant), which tells the Wildhack family story.
The museum includes a fully functional smithy with tools from 1800 to 1900, forged grilles and balcony railings, a collection on horseshoeing, a journeymen's room and an exhibition room with drawings and documents. Visitors can not only watch but also shape metal themselves under guidance.
