About the museum

The park around Villa Lesmona was gradually furnished with sculptures from 1984 onward. In 1982 the gallerist Birgit Waller first opened a gallery on Böttcherstraße in Bremen, but there was no room there for large sculptures. In 1983 she moved with her husband, the artist Jürgen Waller, into the villa in northern Bremen, which had stood as a ruin for a time after a fire in 1980. The sculpture park was created there, and from 1986 a gallery in the lower rooms of the house.

The classicist listed building dates from the early 19th century and lies at the edge of Knoops Park on the Geest ridge above the Lesum. The place became famous through the epistolary novel "Sommer in Lesmona", whose plot is set here in the 1890s and which was filmed at the end of the 1980s.

The concept of the park is simple: the gallery shows three to four exhibitions a year, mostly with sculptures, and one work from each remains in the park afterwards. In this way the collection keeps growing. Today more than 30 large sculptures stand on the lawns around the villa. Although no single style prevails, the collection feels cohesive and high-quality.
