The exhibition documents the multi-year whaling voyages of Bremen ships to the South Seas, focusing on the ships and their crews and on their connection to Vegesack and the Lange-Werft shipyard.
About the museum
The Vegesacker Geschichtenhaus has been run since 2016 by the non-profit employment provider bras e.V. It is housed in the listed former Lange warehouse on the harbor of Bremen-Vegesack, where the shipyard of the Lange shipbuilding family once stood. When the house was founded, the training ship Deutschland was still lying nearby; today it is based in Bremerhaven. The house sees itself as a place that preserves and retells the maritime memories of the district.
Instead of classic display cases, the house relies on theater: in theater-style tours, actors slip into historical roles and lead visitors through Vegesack in the year 1845, past the Lange shipyard, through the counting house of the shipyard owners and into the harbor tavern. The topics include whaling and Greenland voyages as well as the shipbuilding craft of the Lange family.
The Geschichtenhaus is also a place of learning and work: people in subsidized employment, together with paid and volunteer staff, run the operation, from guest services through the tours to event services and food service. The gallery floor hosts changing exhibitions; there are also programs for school classes and adult groups.

Good to know
A theater-style tour lasts about 45 to 60 minutes; the number of participants is limited. Group bookings are possible only with advance registration during regular opening hours (email or contact form; by phone Tue–Sat 10:00–16:00). School class programs combine a theatrical tour with a hands-on activity (building a small wooden boat), 1–1.5 hours, for at most 22 children.
