Local history museum in the Baroque Schloss Schönebeck in Bremen-Nord, with collections on whaling, shipbuilding, rope works and the Africa explorer Gerhard Rohlfs.
Photo exhibition by Joest Leopold in the Kunstkeller: multiple exposures address injustice and crimes committed by the USA at home and abroad over more than a hundred years.
Drawing on holdings of the Heimatmuseum (local history museum), the exhibition shows two expeditions by Captain Eduard Dallmann to New Guinea in the 1880s.
In the Kunstkeller, self-taught artist Anja Fiz from Grasberg shows intuitively painted acrylic and pastel works that draw attention to beauty in small things.
About the museum
Schloss Schönebeck was first documented as a castle in 1357 and was built in the Baroque style around 1640. It has probably belonged to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen since 1950 and is one of the most important historic buildings in Bremen-Nord.
In 1972 the Heimat- und Museumsverein für Vegesack und Umgebung e. V. (local history association for Vegesack and surroundings) set up a museum here. The collection, largely owned by the association, is devoted to the historic whaling from Vegesack (1653 to 1872), the beginnings of industry in the region with the examples of ceramics and rope works, shipbuilding on the Lower Weser, the rescue of shipwrecked sailors, herring fishing, and sailing and steamship navigation.
Separate sections commemorate the Africa traveler Gerhard Rohlfs and the South Seas captain Eduard Dallmann; in addition, there are middle-class living rooms of the 19th century. The large navigation hall also serves as the wedding room.
