About the museum

In 1990 the municipality of Eulenbis bought a farm in the middle of the village to convert it into a community center with several functions. The property included a press room with a fruit mill and pressing equipment. After lengthy deliberation, the municipal council decided to turn it into a small museum. It was not to be a general local history museum, but was to be devoted exclusively to the production of Beerewei(n).

Beerewei(n) is not a berry wine but a pear wine. In the Westpalatinate it is pressed from the "Osborner" or "Frankelbacher" cider pear, which is considered dry and bitter and hardly suitable for eating. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a sandstone fruit press which, together with the fruit mill, was in operation from 1862 to 1954. Also on display are equipment for harvesting, storage and transport, such as a large catch cloth for the pears, as well as a potato mill, a table press from 1878 and barrels.

Drawings, maps, photos and engravings document the history of fruit mills and fruit wine production, and a municipal map shows the village's pear trees. Beerewei(n) has been made in Eulenbis again since 1994; supplies for tastings are stored in the vaulted cellar. The exhibition also highlights the importance of traditional orchard meadows for nature and wildlife.
