About the museum
The museum tells the story of potash mining in Bad Salzdetfurth and of the healing effects of salt. It is an institution of the town and is run together with the Bad Salzdetfurth history association, whose volunteer members also lead the tours.
From 1992 to 2020 the museum was located on St.-Georgsplatz. During the renovation of the saline building it moved to its present premises in 2021. The multifunctional building, which also houses a daycare center and a supervised residential unit, belongs to the Kreiswohnbaugesellschaft Hildesheim; about 20 companies took part in the conversion, concept and fittings.
In the exhibition, a pithead bathhouse (Waschkaue) serves as the cloakroom. On view are interactive media stations, a replica adit with rail bike and passenger car, minerals, drawings by the artist Gerda Becker-With, a small outdoor area with mining tools and plenty of things to try out. Children can explore the exhibition on their own tour and test their knowledge in a rally. Further content is offered online at the media table.
