About the museum
The Neisser Archiv und Heimatmuseum in Hildesheim preserves memories of the former Principality of Neisse in Silesia. Hildesheim is the patron city of Neisse; the museum is looked after by the Neisser Kultur- und Heimatbund e.V., which is financed mainly by donations and membership fees.
It is housed in the Waffenschmiedehaus (Armorer's House), a half-timbered house from 1548 in Hildesheim's old town near St. Godehard's Basilica. The year above the lintel dates the house, and the early Renaissance carvings suggest that an armorer, whose workshop was in the vaulted cellar, was an earlier owner. It is one of the few Hildesheim townhouses that survived the Second World War.
The collection covers everything related to the Neisse homeland, including the former Breslau diocesan territory with its formerly Austrian southern part. The rooms are arranged by theme: the town of Neisse, the Neisse district, the poet Joseph von Eichendorff, a farmhouse parlor and a classroom. Town views and maps hang in the hallway, a small reference library collects writings on the history of the town and district, and in the courtyard a memorial commemorates the victims of war, flight and expulsion.
