About the museum
The Bergbaumuseum is run by the local heritage association "Zeitz-Weißenfelser Braunkohlenrevier", founded in 1991, which is based in the museum. The association is devoted to lignite mining between Zeitz, Weißenfels and Hohenmölsen, which shaped the economy, people and landscape of the region for more than 200 years.
Over the decades an extensive collection has developed: mining equipment, models, maps and plans, photographs, postcards, tools and textiles, as well as an archive on mining history. The exhibition runs from the early farmers' pits through deep mining and open-cast mining, with particular attention to the Profen open-cast mine, to the refining of bitumen-rich coal in Deuben.
One part of the display commemorates the roughly 18 villages that had to make way for mining; another covers the history of the municipality of Deuben, which was independent until 2011. The museum also includes a reconstructed underground drift and a furnished historic classroom.
