About the museum
Teuchern is the birthplace of the baroque composer Reinhard Keiser (1674–1739), who became known across Europe as the chief composer of the Hamburg Opera at the Gänsemarkt. As early as 1974, for his 300th birthday, a memorial plaque was placed on the presumed birthplace at Markt 9. In the 1980s a memorial site was set up there, and its exhibition was completely redesigned in 1996.
In 2012 the memorial moved to the building of the local history museum at Straße des Friedens 30, the cultural and club house "Zum Grünen Baum". For a long time it was run by the friends' association "Reinhard-Keiser-Gedenkstätte"; after its dissolution in early 2020, the Heimatverein Teuchern (local heritage association) looks after the house, which also houses the association's local history museum.
Picture and text panels in two rooms trace the stages of the composer's life, from his childhood in Teuchern through his training years in Leipzig and his successes in Braunschweig to his time in Hamburg. In addition there are replicas of historical instruments, as well as scores, librettos and documents from his life.
