District museum on the village green of Alt-Marzahn covering the history of the five neighborhoods – in the Alte Schule (Old School) and the new Museumsgut, free admission.
Opening exhibition in the Museumsgut: personal mementos from people in the district, many from the GDR and post-reunification periods, complemented by audio stations with their stories. The show keeps growing with new objects during its run.
Exhibition in the Alte Schule on street names and how they changed – from incorporation into Berlin in 1920 through the Nazi and GDR eras to the new housing developments and today's debates. Part of a joint project of Berlin's regional museums.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1999 as the Heimatmuseum Marzahn (local history museum): it opened on September 11, 1999, in the former village school on the green of Alt-Marzahn. The two-story schoolhouse with the curved gable above the entrance had been built in 1912 to plans by Paul Tarruhn for around 90 children.
After the boroughs of Marzahn and Hellersdorf merged in 2001, the Hellersdorf holdings were added, and the museum went by the name Heimatmuseum, later Bezirksmuseum (district museum) Marzahn-Hellersdorf. For a long time the permanent exhibition was on view in a neighboring barn converted during the GDR era (Haus 2); it spanned the period from the first settlement around 11,000 years ago through the medieval green villages of Marzahn, Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Biesdorf to the GDR prefab housing estates and the changes after 1990. This building closed at the end of 2025.
Today the Alte Schule shows changing special exhibitions and houses the collection storage as well as a regional history archive that is open for research by arrangement. At the same time, the museum is gradually moving into the Museumsgut at Alt-Marzahn 23, a former farmstead on the green that was restored from 2023 to 2025 with urban development funding. It opened at the end of August 2026 with an exhibition of everyday objects that residents have given to the museum. In 2027 a completely redesigned permanent exhibition is to follow there, which will also cover the district's history of migration; a new storage building on the site is planned.
