About the museum
The museum apartment came into being in 2004, when a comprehensive renovation of around 1,850 apartments in Hellersdorf's Grabenviertel was approaching. The management of the housing company Stadt und Land at the time wanted to preserve a piece of GDR building history and residential culture, and set up an apartment on the first floor of Hellersdorfer Straße 179 for this purpose.
It is a 61-square-meter three-room apartment of the WBS 70 type, completed in 1986 by the VEB Wohnungsbaukombinat Cottbus. Apart from a few details, it was returned to its original condition and furnished with original furniture and everyday objects, some of which were contributed by residents of the neighborhood. In the living room hangs the most widely sold art print in the GDR, "Junges Paar am Strand" ("Young Couple on the Beach") by Walter Womacka.
About 42,000 apartments of this type were once built in Hellersdorf; the museum apartment is the last one preserved in its original state. Information panels set prices and incomes of the time against each other, such as a color television for 4,200 marks against a monthly rent of 109 marks. Besides individual visitors, school classes, groups and delegations come; the apartment is also used as a location for film, music and photo productions.
