About the museum
The Biebergrund-Museum is run by the Geschichtsverein Biebergemünd e. V. (Biebergemünd History Association) and is devoted to the history of the Biebergrund valley in the Spessart. Long before the move, the association showed its collection at an earlier location in Bieber; its focuses then were geology and mining, the Spessart railway, traditional crafts, domestic life and forestry.
In 2023 the association moved into new rooms in the former post office building in Bieber, which the municipality of Biebergemünd had comprehensively renovated. The newly designed museum opened on May 18, 2023. On the first floor, exhibits recall the former postal service, and the same floor has a social room for clubs and groups. On the upper floor, five theme areas trace the history of the municipality.
The exhibition covers the early settlement by the Celts, the geology with iron ore and cobalt as the basis of mining, the Spessart railway that carried raw materials out of the mines, and the role of religion, which has left six churches in the municipality to this day. The town rights of Wirtheim from 1365 are also a theme. Screens with videos and audio cues complement the display cases; for children there is a replica mine tunnel to crawl through.
