Town museum of Bad Orb on town history, spa life, religious life and salt production across four floors.

Opening hoursAdmission €2.50

About the museum

The Bad Orb town museum opened on October 15, 1989. It is housed in a restored three-story residential building from the Middle Ages, which goes back to a fortification first mentioned in the 11th century. The museum is run by the town; its setup was funded by the State of Hesse and the Bad Orber Geschichts- und Heimatverein (local history association).

The exhibition is spread over four floors. On the first floor, "Stadtgeschichte(n)" (redesigned in 2021) shows the development of the town and its buildings over more than a thousand years. The second floor has been devoted to spa life since 1993: from pharmacist Koch's bathhouse of 1837 to the spa facilities of around 1900, with a reconstructed bathing cabin from 1911. The third floor has covered church history and popular piety since 1995.

On the top floor, the salt section (opened in 2006, revised in 2015) explains how salt was produced in Orb over the centuries; the highlight is the large model of the saltworks in its 1862 state, at a scale of 1:200.
