About the museum

The museum goes back to the Eibau Humboldt Association, founded in 1864 as a natural history education society, which gathered natural specimens, curiosities and souvenirs from travels. Merchants from Eibau and missionaries abroad enriched the holdings, so the collection recalls the curiosity cabinets of earlier centuries.

From 1923 to 2012 the museum was housed on the Beckenberg in Eibau. The municipality has looked after the collection since 1951, and the Humboldt Association works on a voluntary basis. Following a municipal council resolution of 2007, the two attic floors of the Faktorenhaus, including the staircase and an elevator, were fitted out for the exhibition; the museum opened in its new location on October 31, 2012.

The Faktorenhaus, completed in 1717 in rural Upper Lusatian Baroque style, belongs to a listed three-sided farmstead whose restoration began in 1995. Today the museum presents local history topics such as brewing, aviation on the Kottmar, the village church and former trades, as well as movable Bohemian Christmas cribs. The Max-Langer-Stuben (parlors) display paintings by the Upper Lusatian painter Max Langer.
