About the museum
The post mill on the edge of Libehna was built in 1814; the date is carved into the mill's trestle (Bock). It stands on a Neolithic burial mound and originally probably belonged to the local estate (Domäne). The first documented miller is Heinrich August Thiemann, for the years 1853 to 1857. From 1881, Louis Berger from Meilendorf operated the mill for about six decades and upgraded it in the 1920s.
After 1948, Ernst Friedmann junior modernized the installation, but had to give up the trade in 1962. A storm in November 1972 caused severe damage, after which the building increasingly fell into disrepair. Restoration began in 1984, preventing total collapse. After reunification, Stefan Lander from Halle initially took care of the upkeep and the machinery.
Today the citizens' association Alte Mühle Libehna keeps the listed mill in working order and opens it to visitors. Since 1987 it has held the mill festival (Mühlenfest) on the last weekend of July, and the mill also opens on German Mill Day. For the coming years the association is preparing the renewal of the roof covering, which was last renewed in the 1980s.
