About the museum
The fire brigade museum in Riesdorf grew out of the idea of collecting old fire brigade equipment. On August 9, 2000, the association "Historisches Feuerwehrmuseum Riesdorf e.V." was founded for this purpose in the restaurant "Zur Linde"; it was later renamed "Feuerwehrmuseum Riesdorf e.V." Around twelve members keep the museum running.
In the exhibition rooms, visitors may look at and touch what has been gathered over the years: two hand-drawn syringes, four horse-drawn syringes, several vehicles and, across five rooms, nozzles, breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers, hand sirens, helmets, uniforms and a large amount of written material. The oldest piece is a hand-operated pump from 1811, on loan from the Riemer family of Körnitz. It still works and was used at the museum festival in 2011.
The association also wants to develop the site as a meeting place for all ages, youth fire brigades and cyclists. After-school groups (Hortklassen) and youth fire brigades like to spend a few hours at the museum, where alongside fire safety education there are games on the fire brigade theme.
