About the museum
The museum grew out of a school collection: around 1983/84, teachers at the Heeslingen school gathered tools from village crafts and everyday rural life and displayed them in an unused classroom. As the collection grew, a building was sought that would also suit the age of the pieces.
The Heimat- und Fördergemeinschaft Börde Heeslingen, founded in 1977, moved a two-post half-timbered house (Zweiständer-Fachwerkhaus) in the Lower Saxon style, built in 1864, from Stemmen to Heeslingen in 1988/89; around 236 volunteers contributed roughly 6,000 hours of unpaid work. The heritage house with the integrated museum was opened in May 1989.
Around the house a farmstead was created, with a heath and peat barn (Heide- und Torfscheune) built in 1691 and relocated in 1990, a bake house, a wagon shed, a beehive area, a reconstructed draw well, and an information pavilion on native animals and plants. The more than 800 exhibits are mainly on the upper floor and in the hall (Diele). Upstairs there are also changing theme exhibitions, for example on trades or on a kitchen from the time of the grandparents.
