About the museum
An archiepiscopal brickworks is already mentioned on this site in 1535; its hand-moulded bricks were used to extend the bishop's residence in Bremervörde. In 1840 the farmer Johann Pape founded a new operation as a sideline to his farm and built a treading floor, two drying sheds, a well and a peat-fired single-chamber kiln, which still survives.
After the switch to machine production of the raw bricks in 1902, a Hoffmann ring kiln was completed in 1912, which considerably increased output. The brickworks remained in operation until the end of 1973, apart from interruptions during the world wars.
Following its listing as a protected monument in 1976 and a thorough renovation funded by grants, the association "Ziegelei Pape, Bevern e. V.", founded in 1997, opened today's industrial museum in 2000. Here, traditional brickmaking can be followed in vivid detail.
