About the museum
The Franciscan monastery of Bardel was founded in 1922 as a mission house. Since then more than 300 young men from here have gone to Brazil as missionaries, mainly to the poor northeast of the country and to the Amazon. The friars brought exhibits from Brazil to Germany from the very beginning.
The impetus for a museum of its own came from Father Clemens Anheuser (1887–1968). He had already collected objects in Brazil together with fellow friars, and after his return at the end of 1926, due to illness, he saw the establishment of a museum as a task for the future. The first collection was housed in two rooms, one above the other, in the tower of the monastery school, and survived the war and postwar period only in part. Later the museum was located under the assembly hall of the mission secondary school; today it is in the monastery wing.
On display are folk art, objects relating to Candomblé, animals such as birds, a giant tortoise, crocodiles, large snakes and piranhas, as well as religious artworks, semiprecious stones and fossils. Other themes include the culture and life of the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon and the social divide between rich and poor in Brazil today.
