About the museum

The impetus for a museum of popular music in Gronau came from rock musician Udo Lindenberg, who was born here. After several years of planning, in which the Popkomm music trade fair was also involved, the museum opened in the summer of 2004. It occupies the former turbine hall of the textile company Mathieu van Delden – a reminder of the textile industry that once shaped Gronau – which was converted for museum use.

Since 2007, the original recording studio of the Cologne band CAN has been part of the collection. The musicians had set it up in 1971 in a former movie theater in Weilerswist; later, René Tinner also produced recordings there, for example for Marius Müller-Westernhagen. The studio, with its mixing consoles, tape machines, and synthesizers, can be seen in the museum's basement.

After a complete redesign, the museum reopened in November 2018. Instead of a chronological narrative, the permanent exhibition is now organized into staged theme islands on concepts such as rebellion or "Live on Stage", accompanied by an elaborate sound system and audio guides. A new event area was added; today, concerts and parties take place in the Turbine music club in the basement. In the Greenbox, visitors can shoot their own music videos. For Lindenberg's 80th birthday in 2026, the museum is showing a special exhibition featuring his original Hamburg hotel room.
