About the museum
Pater Clemens Anheuser, who had inspired the Brasilienmuseum (Brazil Museum), also set up a stamp museum at Kloster Bardel, which was especially close to his heart. He found rooms for it on the second and third floors above the monastery gate. Alongside the Franciscan Gabriel Schmidt of the Cologne Franciscan province, Anheuser is also regarded as a co-founder of the collectors' guild "St. Gabriel." Even before the war he had arranged stamps on large display panels, and some of these panels have survived to this day.
He did not live to see his museum opened. After his death it was named after him, and it has since been known as the Pater-Clemens-Anheuser-Briefmarkenmuseum. Later confreres have continually added newly issued stamps to the collection to keep it up to date.
The holdings are arranged by subject, including a Madonna collection, a collection on the history of missions, and a collection "Churches and Cathedrals from Around the World." The museum aims to show how the postage stamp can serve as a means of Christian proclamation. Like the Brasilienmuseum, it can only be visited after prior registration.
