About the museum

The writer Brigitte Reimann moved from Hoyerswerda to Neubrandenburg in 1968 and lived in the ground-floor apartment of a small villa at Gartenstraße 6 until her death in 1973. Here she worked on her unfinished novel "Franziska Linkerhand".

In 1993 the city decided to convert the house into a literature house. In 1995, with the help of the state, the federal government, foundations and donors, the Literaturzentrum Neubrandenburg acquired the author's estate for the city. During the renovation work, however, the old building collapsed and had to be demolished; a new building was erected in its place and opened on 20 February 1999.

The Literaturzentrum Neubrandenburg, founded in 1971 and run as an association since 1993, has its seat in the literature house. A permanent exhibition shows manuscripts, documents, photographs, original furniture, paintings and a large part of Reimann's library. The house also offers readings, book launches and discussion groups as well as an archive on regional literary history; the garden invites visitors to linger.
