About the museum

The roots reach back to the 19th century: in 1890 the painter Henry Stoll, a native of Neubrandenburg, bequeathed his art holdings to the city, thereby founding the only civic art museum in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1911 the estate of the art dealer August Schmidt, with prints and Meissen porcelain, was added. From 1920 the Städtische Kunstsammlung was housed in the south wing of the ducal palace, which burned out at the end of April 1945; the whereabouts of the holdings that had been relocated beforehand remain unknown to this day.

In 1982 the city re-established the Kunstsammlung. Initially housed in a half-timbered villa outside the center, it began building a collection of contemporary visual art that now comprises more than 7,600 works – with groups of works by, for example, Hermann Glöckner, Werner Stötzer, Max Uhlig or Strawalde as well as by artists from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Since 2003 the museum has been located on Große Wollweberstraße: a listed 18th-century half-timbered house is connected to a modern extension and encloses a small inner courtyard. Special exhibitions and collection exhibitions alternate on two floors with about 400 square meters.

In 2006, excavations on the Marktplatz brought to light shards and melted remains of the old porcelain and sculpture collection. The Cologne artist Simon Schubert worked this story of loss into two room installations, the "Brandzimmer" (Fire Room) and the "Weißes Zimmer" (White Room), which are on permanent display.
