About the museum

The landscape and architectural painter Marie Hager (1872–1947) came from Penzlin and arrived in Burg Stargard through painting courses of the so-called Stargarder Malschule (Stargard painting school). In 1921 she had a home and studio built to her own specifications on Dewitzer Chaussee, where she lived until her death. The listed building is considered one of the few largely original, preserved artists' houses for women in Germany.

Hager had initially studied singing, then turned to painting and, from 1904, studied with Max Uth and Eugen Bracht, among others. She preferred to work outdoors and created harbor, city, and landscape pictures in a late Impressionist manner in oil, watercolor, woodcut, and other techniques; her works were shown at exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Paris.

In 1991 her niece and heir handed over the house to the town with large parts of her estate, original furniture, and more than 30 paintings, with the charge of creating a memorial and meeting place for art. Since 1996 the house has been a biographical museum and gallery; in the same year the Marie Hager-Kunstverein (art association) was founded, which expands the holdings through purchases and donations and has paintings restored.

Following renovation and extension in 2018, the house has also housed the town library since 2019. Besides the permanent exhibition on the painter's life and work, the association presents changing exhibitions by regional artists in three rooms and organizes readings, lectures, and courses.
