About the museum

The museum's story begins in 1872, when citizens of Neubrandenburg and notables from the surrounding area founded a museum association. Its aim was to collect, research, and publicly display evidence of the region's past. The town gave the association the Treptower Tor, a city gate where the first exhibition floor opened just a year later – the beginning of one of the oldest civic museums in the region.

The association ran the museum until 1935; under pressure from the Nazis it dissolved, and the museum passed into municipal ownership. The collections came through the fire that destroyed much of the town in 1945 largely unscathed, and the museum reopened as early as October 1948. As the Historisches Museum of the Neubrandenburg district, it gained additional sites from 1982; its archaeology and research on Rethra, the Germanic peoples, and the Middle Ages in particular earned it a reputation beyond the region.

Since 1990 the institution has been called Regionalmuseum Neubrandenburg, and the museum association was re-established that same year. After stints in a villa near the train station and in the Vierrademühle mill, the permanent exhibition on the history of the town and region moved in 2013 into the former Franciscan monastery, the oldest building in town; the EU-funded redesign was developed together with the Polish partner city of Stargard. In addition, the museum shows an exhibition on Brick Gothic architecture in the tower of the Konzertkirche and the exhibition "Die Slawen und Rethra" (The Slavs and Rethra) in the Treptower Tor.
