About the museum
The astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) died in November 1630 during a short stay in Regensburg. The house at Keplerstraße 5 where this happened has been preserved. As part of the early renovation of the old town, the city set up a memorial house there, which from 1959/61 commemorated Kepler with reconstructed interiors of the 17th century. For decades little changed, until the building was in urgent need of renovation and the display was no longer up to date.
With funds from the Free State of Bavaria and the EU (ERDF), the house was renovated in close coordination with historic preservation and made barrier-free. A new elevator on the south side reaches all four floors; a second entrance links the museum to Haidplatz and Rathausplatz; the entrance on Keplerstraße received a ramp and a stair lift. Since February 2, 2024 the house has reopened as "document Kepler".
The newly designed exhibition combines classic exhibits such as books, letters and historical instruments with interactive elements; an audio and media guide accompanies visitors through the house. On the fourth floor a "Science Lab" with hands-on stations, including on telescope building, the process of seeing and optics, is gradually being created.
