About the museum
The Central Heating Museum belongs to the heating technology company Buderus, which is headquartered in Lollar near Gießen. It is housed in a villa on the edge of the factory grounds, built in 1862 by then works manager Georg Buderus III. The company set up the building as a home for its specialist library and a collection on the history of heat generation; today the museum belongs to Bosch Thermotechnik GmbH.
Across about 300 square meters, the museum displays around 100 exhibits from 1750 to the present. On view are cast-iron stoves, fireplace plates, a historic bathing installation, central heating boilers for air, steam, and hot water, as well as solar collectors and control systems. The display traces the path from stove heating to modern central heating and also documents the company's long experience in heating technology.
The museum includes the Buderus Library, a historic specialist library on energy conservation with around 5,000 books. The oldest work dates from 1618; original plans for the heating system of the Berlin Reichstag from 1895 are also kept there. Visitors may tour the building free of charge after registering.
