About the museum
The Office Museum was established in 1977 on the eleventh floor of the Mülheim town hall tower. City administration staff had painstakingly assembled and set up a collection on the history of office work. Across three floors and about 130 square meters, around 300 objects were on display; an office from the turn of the century with a heavy desk served as the opening.
The exhibition showed early typewriters, hand-cranked and electric calculating machines, a copier from the 1930s, old telephones, dictating machines, time clocks, and bookkeeping machines. It also made clear that the office machine industry grew out of bicycle and sewing machine manufacturing.
Since 2013 the museum has been closed because the tower lacks a second escape route. For fire safety reasons, the collection has since been kept in storage.
