About the museum

In the 19th century, the building at Ruhrstraße 3 on the banks of the Ruhr in Mülheim was the seat of colonial goods merchants; the Schmitz-Scholl family, whose business later grew into the Tengelmann group, lived and worked here. Later, the glass manufacturer Carl Nedelmann had the house remodelled by master builder Ernst Niebel; striking features include the large entrance portal, fabulous creatures on the gable and the white Art Nouveau staircase.

After decades as a residential and office building, most recently for the Gesellschaft für Stromwirtschaft, the property has been used as an art house since 2012. It is run by the Kunstverein und Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr (KKRR), which operates the Galerie an der Ruhr, the "Museum Moderne Kunst Mülheim" (MMKM) and studios here; since 2015 the Mülheimer Künstlerbund has also been based in the building.

The gallery shows changing solo and group exhibitions by regional and international artists, complemented by openings, art auctions and outreach projects. A gallery courtyard presents sculptures and objects.
