MMKM – Museum Moderne Kunst Mülheim
Private, volunteer-run art museum in the historic Villa Schmitz-Scholl on the Ruhr – free admission and tours, visits by appointment.
About the museum
The villa on Ruhrstraße, at the corner of Delle, was built around 1850 as a residence and business building for the Schmitz-Scholl family, whose colonial goods trade later gave rise to the Tengelmann group. The building served as both an office and a warehouse; later it belonged to the glass manufacturer Carl Nedelmann. It has been a listed building since 1988.
The idea of a private art museum was born in the context of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. From 2012, the Mülheimer Kunstverein and Kunstförderverein Rhein-Ruhr (KKRR) and other local art initiatives developed the building into a cultural venue under the name "Villa Artis." Besides the MMKM, it houses the Ruhr Gallery Mülheim and artists' studios.
On more than 1,300 square meters, the museum shows contemporary art in a variety of styles with a focus on regional artists, as well as works by recipients of the Mülheim Ruhrpreis and guest positions. The rooms are named after famous artists. The house is run entirely by volunteers and without public subsidies; admission and tours of the exhibitions, depot, and studios are free.
