About the museum

The Tersteegenhaus is a Bergisch half-timbered house on the church hill of Mülheim's old town. A building-history study dates it to around 1530. The Pietist preacher and hymn writer Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769) lived and worked here. After wartime destruction, the house was reconstructed and set up as a museum in 1950.

The cultural history collection includes paintings, furniture, household goods and other exhibits. In addition to Tersteegen, it commemorates the physician and writer Carl Arnold Kortum (1745–1824), the poet of the "Jobsiade", and the entrepreneur Mathias Stinnes (1790–1845), who laid the foundation for a trading company with river vessels and coal trade.

After the museum post was not refilled in 1995, the history association organized tours and supervision. When closure was being discussed in 2010/11, the Friends and Support Circle of the Heimatmuseum Tersteegenhaus was founded in May 2011. In April 2017, the house had to close due to acute risk of collapse. In 2022, the topping-out ceremony for the first construction phase took place; in 2026, the state pledged funding for renovation and expansion.
