About the museum
The Wolf Kahlen Museum is dedicated to the work of media artist Wolf Kahlen (born 1940 in Aachen), who has been working since 1969 with film, video, video sculpture, photography, and performance. The house is in Bernau's old town on the city wall, directly by the Pulverturm (powder tower).
The presentation spans from 1956 to the present and features video sculptures, tapes, performances, and installations, along with photo and sound works, architecture, drawings, paintings, texts, and net art. Many pieces are on loan from private collections around the world; a particular focus is the avant-garde work of the 1960s and 1970s.
The museum also includes the archive of the Ruine der Künste Berlin, where Kahlen showed a ten-part retrospective between 2000 and 2003, as well as his research on a Tibetan "Leonardo," the scholar Thang-stong rGyal-po. In a separate room, the RaumNullEins, projects by artists from all disciplines are occasionally presented. A small café with a terrace above the medieval city wall complements the visit; a circle of friends, the Freunde der Künste Bernau, supports the work of the house.
