About the museum
In the early 1980s, Burg Bodenteich was threatened with demolition. Committed citizens therefore founded the Förderkreis Burg Bodenteich e. V. (castle support association) in November 1981. Thanks to their advocacy and a state grant covering 70 percent, the complex could be restored; the association financed the archaeological investigations. The castle was re-inaugurated in October 1988, and from January 1989 the spa administration moved in.
From April 1989, the support association set up the castle museum on the upper floor of the administrative building, where it has since been open to the public from spring to autumn, run by volunteers. Of the original buildings, the stump of the castle tower and the former administrative building still stand; the brewhouse and bakehouse were rebuilt. A model shows the main castle as it looked in 1803.
The permanent exhibitions cover the castle's history with excavation finds from the castle cellar; the von Bodendieck family; flax processing and 19th-century shoemaking; early history and urn finds; the fire brigade and major fires; the former munitions depot "Muna" and its explosion disaster; the construction of the Elbe Side Canal; the Bodenteich Seewiesen (lake meadows); and former businesses of the town.
