About the museum
Isenhagen Monastery was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1243 by Duchess Agnes, initially at Alt-Isenhagen. After a fire and a further relocation, the complex was established around 1345 at its present site in Hankensbüttel, a brick Gothic complex. With the Reformation the monastery was converted in 1540 into a Protestant ladies' foundation, which still exists today and is inhabited by its convent members.
The Klosterhofmuseum is housed in a former storehouse of the monastery, the oldest secular building in the district. It focuses less on spiritual life than on the economic side of monastic communities: agriculture, livestock farming, crafts and trade.
The museum includes a reconstructed medicinal herb garden, which shows how monastery gardens came about and what their plants were used for in medicine and cooking. The monastery itself is inhabited and can only be visited on a guided tour.
