Nine artists from the art38 network present their concrete and abstract interpretations of the theme of the river as an image of life.
The path to the museum began in 1986, when the TU Braunschweig set up a research unit for school history at the Gifhorn district administration. It collected archive sources, made contacts with other school museums and gathered the first exhibits. The Schulmuseum Steinhorst was founded on May 15, 1992. Today it belongs to the museums of the Landkreis Gifhorn (Gifhorn district).
It is housed in a half-timbered farmhouse from the late 17th or early 18th century. The farmstead also includes the former village forge from 1822, which now houses the library, and the Erich-Weniger-Haus, a new building on the site of the former barn, used for special exhibitions, events and lectures.
The collection focuses on rural schooling in the Gifhorn area in the 19th and 20th centuries. The school-book library comprises almost 20,000 volumes. In 1999 a donation brought a large collection of historic toys, with which the museum also looks at the world of children.
