About the museum
The Hüttenstollen was driven between 1842 and 1845, after mine master Hartleben reorganized mining in the Osterwald from 1833. It supplied coal to, among others, the nearby glassworks. Coal extraction was halted for the first time in 1894, and mining in the Osterwald ended in 1926. After 1947, coal and clay were extracted there once more, until 1954. From 1960 to 1973, the adit served as a water supply facility for the village.
The initiative to preserve the adit and open it to visitors came from the Osterwald village council in the late 1970s. On June 16, 1980, the association to promote mining in Osterwald (Verein zur Förderung des Bergmannswesens Osterwald) was founded, and on June 28, 1980, the show mine opened. Volunteers expanded the underground passage network over the following decades.
The museum at the adit, under the motto "Energie," is devoted to hard coal mining, the tools and miners' lamps used by miners, their daily life, as well as glass production, clay processing, and the quarries of the region. Earth history is also explained.
