About the museum
Burg Neufelsberg, colloquially known as the Teufelsburg (Devil's Castle), was built between 1354 and 1390. The first written mention, from 1370, concerns a contract between Duke Jean I of Lorraine as the builder and the knight Arnold von Felsberg. The complex stood as a spur castle on a rocky outcrop in the Saargau region and consisted of an outer bailey and a main castle.
The castle was inhabited only until 1612; afterwards it fell into ruin. A definitive destruction is not documented, but its stones were later used for building the fortress of Saarlouis from 1680 onward.
From 1964 the castle was excavated, and in 1968 the Fördergemeinschaft der Teufelsburg (Teufelsburg support association) was formed from this work. The main castle has been largely uncovered and partly rebuilt. The museum was set up from the excavation finds in the former storage cellar of the main castle; a model of the entire complex is also on display there.
