About the museum

The Städtisches Museum Saarlouis is at its core a local history museum that opened on October 1, 1927, in rooms of Kaserne VI. In the twenties, numerous objects, pictures, and documents came together through donations from the circle of the local heritage association (Heimatverein). It is therefore the oldest municipal history museum in Saarland.

Large parts of the collection were lost in World War II. With the surviving holdings, the local history museum reopened in October 1955. In October 1975, it moved to other rooms within Kaserne VI and was given the name Städtisches Museum Saarlouis; for the town's 300th anniversary in 1980, representative rooms were added on the third floor. Since then, about 1,300 square meters of exhibition space have been available.

Kaserne VI was built in the Classicist style between 1866 and 1869 by the Prussian military administration; it replaced a French building on the same site. The focus of the permanent exhibition is the emergence and development of the fortress and town of Saarlouis, shown through maps, engravings, documents, and models. The museum also covers the economy, crafts, social life, and art and culture of the Saarlouis region, the Saar area, and Lorraine.
