About the museum
In 1993 the Saarlouis district acquired a vacant, dilapidated Lorraine farmhouse in the Gisingen district of Wallerfangen and had it faithfully restored. In 1998 it opened as a farmhouse museum. The oldest part of the building dates from between 1735 and 1750.
In the house, the museum shows historic furniture from the holdings of the Saarlandmuseum, including pieces from the early 19th century, as well as a collection of old Lorraine fireplace, fireback and stove plates. In the former stable, a permanent exhibition with an interactive panorama map informs visitors about the history and development of the Saargau. Behind the house lies a cottage garden with around 150 plants, which belongs to the cross-border network "Gärten ohne Grenzen" (Gardens Without Borders), as well as an orchard meadow with beehives.
In recent years the house has developed into a cultural and event venue with a program from March to October. A museum concept funded with LEADER money supplements the display on the upper floor with themes such as customs, economic and industrial history and the location on the border with France. The house also contains an information office of the Naturpark Saar-Hunsrück.
