Historisches Museum Wallerfangen
Museum in a former schoolhouse on the Adolphshöhe, showing the history of Wallerfangen from the Stone Age to the Villeroy earthenware factory.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1983 and is housed in a former school building with a teacher's apartment. It is part of the listed Adolphshöhe ensemble, a closely built-up square created in the second half of the 19th century. The sponsor is the municipality of Wallerfangen; the museum was set up and is run by the Verein für Heimatforschung Wallerfangen (local history research association), founded in 1976.
Under its longtime chairman Dr. Peter Winter, the former local history museum was completely redesigned. After closing in the fall of 2014 and undergoing renovation, it reopened in 2015 under the name Historisches Museum Wallerfangen and has since focused on the distinctive features of local history.
The permanent exhibition begins with Neolithic stone axes from the Saargau and leads through the Celts, with their fortified hilltop settlement on the Limberg and the jewelry of the so-called Celtic princess, to Gallo-Roman votive stones and Roman mining of the blue pigment azurite. Other topics include the medieval town of Wallerfangen as an administrative seat of the Duchy of Lorraine, its destruction in 1687 after the founding of Saarlouis, and the earthenware factory of the Villeroy family, which existed from 1791 to 1931 and is represented by numerous ceramics. The museum also shows changing exhibitions.
