About the museum
The regional museum stands on Uslarplatz in Wolfhagen. The old Renthof, last rebuilt in the 18th century, consists, like the neighbouring district office and the tithe barn, mainly of stones from the demolished Wolfhagen castle; the castle gate tower and a section of the ring wall are embedded in the core of the building.
The Museumsverein Wolfhagen began converting and extending the building in 1976 because its previous home in the "Alte Wache" on the market square was no longer sufficient. The half-timbering inside and old wooden ceilings were uncovered, and a cellar vault was made accessible again. After three years of work, the rooms were furnished.
The Renthof covers prehistory and early history, church, castle and town in the Middle Ages, crafts and guilds, and life in the farmer-burgher house with craft rooms. In the tithe barn, further sections show half-timbered architecture with numerous models, everyday culture, the earth history of the Wolfhager Land with traces of Chirotherium reptiles, the town founders from the House of the Ludowinger, an art gallery and the history of money. A room under the roof is dedicated to Hans Staden, the adventurer from Wolfhagen, whose account of his travels in Brazil was printed in Marburg in 1557. Between the two buildings, a geological time path links the epochs of earth history.
A further museum site on Mittelstraße is planned for the future, with which the association aims to expand its offering and improve accessibility and interpretation.
