DB Museum Koblenz
Branch of the DB Museum in a railcar shed in Koblenz-Lützel, with locomotives, the federal government's saloon cars and TEE vehicles.
About the museum
The DB Museum Koblenz opened in April 2001 as the first branch of the DB Museum in Nuremberg. It occupies the railcar shed of the former Koblenz-Lützel locomotive depot, built around 1905 when the freight yard was expanded. The museum is supported by the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung (Deutsche Bahn Foundation); it is largely run by volunteers from the circle of the foundation family BSW & EWH.
The focus is on vehicles of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (West German Federal Railway). Around 50 locomotives are on display along with about as many passenger and freight cars, including numerous electric locomotives, two power cars of the TEE diesel multiple unit VT 11.5 and a replica of the locomotive “Adler”. Most vehicles can be viewed up close.
The saloon cars used by the federal government until the 1990s are a special feature – such as the car in which Konrad Adenauer traveled to Moscow and a car built in 1974 during Helmut Schmidt's time in office. Part of the collection is in working order and is used at railway festivals and on special excursions. After the fire in the Nuremberg engine shed in 2005, damaged vehicles were also restored here.
