About the museum
On May 1, 1794, Johann Friedrich Deinhard founded a wine business in Koblenz. From 1843, the house produced sparkling wine by the traditional bottle fermentation method. When Emma Deinhard, the granddaughter of the founder, married Julius Wegeler in 1861, and he later took over management of the company, the business grew into a modern sparkling wine producer; to this day the Wegeler family remains connected to viticulture and to the museum.
A wine and sparkling wine museum was set up in 1969 in the vaults beneath the Deinhard-Stammhaus on Deinhardplatz, and its cellar has remained largely unchanged since. Today it is run by a civil-law partnership (GbR) under the name Koblenzer Sektmuseum; it was formerly known as the Deinhard-Museum or Deinhard Kellermuseum.
The museum can be visited only on a guided tour. Guides explain the steps of viticulture and of wine and sparkling wine production with original equipment, above all the champagne method. The program also includes a walk through the old town with wine stories and a tour on Ludwig van Beethoven's connection to Koblenz and his friendship with the Wegeler family.
