October 24, 2026 – February 14, 2027
Cabinet exhibition of multilayered, material-focused works by the regional artist that invite quiet contemplation.
The Mittelrhein-Museum dates back to 1835. Koblenz priest Joseph Gregor Lang had bequeathed his collection of almost 200 paintings, prints, books, coins and decorative arts to the city – on condition that it be made accessible to the public. Civic commitment turned it into a municipal museum.
Over the years the museum moved several times. Its most formative home was the Altes Kaufhaus on Florinsmarkt, where the collection was housed from 1870 and again from 1965. In 2013 the museum moved into the newly built Forum Confluentes on Zentralplatz, a striking cultural building by the Amsterdam firm Benthem Crouwel, which it shares with the city library and the tourist information office.
Today the holdings comprise some 1,900 paintings, more than 11,000 works on paper, sculptures, photographs, coins, ceramics and objects of cultural history. The permanent exhibition, covering about 1,900 square meters, leads chronologically through galleries devoted to individual periods: from medieval sculpture and panel painting through the Baroque – with a gallery of its own for Januarius Zick – Neoclassicism, Biedermeier and Rhine Romanticism to the Düsseldorf School of painting, classical modernism and the present. Changing special and cabinet exhibitions round out the program; the museum also runs the Mutter-Beethoven-Haus in Ehrenbreitstein.
