About the museum

The idea of a carnival museum in Koblenz took shape in the late 1990s, when the Landesmuseum (state museum) at Festung Ehrenbreitstein first brought together festive exhibits in an exhibition. A newly founded association seized the opportunity, asked the Koblenz carnival clubs for loans, and built up a collection of orders, uniforms, pictures and accessories from Rosenmontag floats. The city made the Kehlturm of the Prussian Fort Konstantin available; the association itself took charge of the interior fit-out.

The museum opened on April 19, 2001. Since 2003 the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Koblenzer Karneval (Koblenz Carnival Working Group) has run it on a volunteer basis, supported by a friends' association. The collection of carnival orders spans from 1930 to the present; for lack of space, only part of it is on display. Further large order collections have since been added.

The museum is not limited to Koblenz: across roughly 350 square meters it traces the Rhine from Basel through the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet to Mainz, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf. On the lower floor, leaded-glass coats of arms recall the Koblenz carnival societies affiliated with it.
