About the museum
The Geschichtsboden traces back to local historian Hans Schneider, who began documenting the history of his region around 1980. Farm histories, documents, photos, and objects soon piled up so much that his house was bursting at the seams. In 1998, Johannes Gottinger converted an attic for the collection, and in 1999 the "Geschichtsboden" opened. Over two decades, more than thirty exhibitions and almost two hundred lectures on local history were produced.
When the building in the village center had to be demolished in 2017, the Kastulus-Bader-Stiftung of the Leipfinger-Bader brick works took over sponsorship. In the company's headquarters in Vatersdorf, the Neue Geschichtsboden was set up in the renovated top floor, with a built-in elevator.
Today it sees itself as a museum, archive, library, and workshop all at once. The permanent exhibition shows selected key objects, a "collection cloud" of almost a thousand items, and a time machine for journeys into the region's past. The knowledge store brings together the virtual and analog archive as well as the library.
