About the museum
Since 2004, the local history museum of the Kirchberg/Holzland classic car friends (Oldtimerfreunde) has been taking shape on the Schusteranger in Thal, thanks to the efforts of members, patrons and donors. Its centerpiece is a 12 by 31 meter replica of a farmstead typical of the region, with a kitchen, a parlor and a cross passage (Querflez), a hand-built Bohemian vault in the entrance corridor and old Solnhofen stone paving. The main building was completed in summer 2018.
Inside, an exhibition room displays Kröning pottery (Hafnergeschirr), barber-surgeon's instruments and historical photographs. Across two floors are carriages and sleighs, household and farm machinery, a carpentry shop, a cobbler's workshop, a general store, a classroom and, since 2017, a working wheelwright's workshop; the large room has a floor made of more than 9,000 end-grain wood blocks.
An outbuilding with an 18th-century roof frame houses a forge with a belt-drive transmission. The grounds also include the neo-Gothic chapel Maria in Thal, consecrated in 2010, a working bread oven, a wind pump and a water basin (Wassergrand) from 1436, the oldest item in the museum.
