Designpanoptikum
Private museum in the Nikolaiviertel that combines puzzling 20th-century industrial objects, without labels, into a surreal room installation.
About the museum
The Designpanoptikum was created by photographer Vlad Korneev, who began collecting unusual technical objects while working as an assistant in Hamburg. After a first shop-museum in Schwerin, he opened the collection in November 2010 on Torstraße in Berlin-Mitte. In 2017 the museum moved to Poststraße in the Nikolaiviertel, not far from the Nikolaikirche. Since then the still-growing collection has been shown there as a permanent room installation.
On display are objects from medicine, film and photo technology, aviation, sports, construction and the household – such as prostheses, an iron lung or an ejection seat. Unlike in traditional design museums, the focus is not on individual pieces with explanations: the objects are arranged without labels, like in a cabinet of curiosities, creating surprising combinations and leaving visitors to work out for themselves what the often strange-looking devices were once used for. The founder often guides visitors through the rooms himself and tells the stories behind the objects. The museum thus sees itself less as a design museum in the classic sense and more as a mind game between logic and imagination, in which the form and original function of the objects diverge.
